National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
May 1, 2022 - May 31, 2022
Designated in 1983 by the President’s Council on Fitness, May is the month to promote healthy lifestyles among all Americans and improve our quality of life.
American leaders realized fitness was vital for our citizens as early as 1956, when President Eisenhower created the President’s Council on Youth Fitness, renamed in the early 1960s by President Kennedy as the President’s Council on Physical Fitness to include people of all ages.
Celebrate this month by promoting the importance of 60 minutes per day of physical activity for kids (and 30 minutes per day for adults) and providing opportunities to be physically active at school and at home.
Physical activity is an essential part of staying healthy and maintaining good quality of life throughout one’s lifetime. Exercising offers immediate and long-term benefits to how people feel, function, and sleep. Everyone benefits from exercise and a new study published recently suggests that it is never too late to start being regularly active to see the benefits.
