Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month
April 1, 2023 - April 30, 2023
April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.
Although this month is highlighted, please remember that we should be preventing cruelty to animals all year long in whatever way we can.
One of the easiest ways to support the prevention of cruelty to animals is by lending a hand to your local shelters. You can do this in a few ways: volunteer your time to be a dog walker, a cleaner, help socializing abused animals, or by becoming a foster parent.
If you don’t have time to make a commitment at your local shelter, why not create a fundraiser instead by organizing a fun walk/run, collecting supplies (such as food, treats, and toys), holding a bake sale, or a crafts event where a portion of the proceeds are sent to the shelter.
Of course, you can simply decide to support your local shelter with a monetary donation. If you want to learn more, reach out to the shelters in your area and find out what they need.
All year long, report animal cruelty.
It is incredibly important that we do our part to end cruelty and abuse to animals. To do this, try to familiarize yourself with the laws in your area and who to reach out to if you witness animal abuse or cruelty. Be sure to document the details of the situation—the date, time, location, and person(s) involved are all important information. If you can do it safely, document through photos or videos as this will help to strengthen the case.
Change the laws where you are.
If you are not happy with your area’s laws regarding animals or protection of animals, why not start a rally to highlight the need for change. Currently, Oregon is the only state in the United States that has recognized animals as sentient beings. More info about this can be found here:
