World Press Freedom Day
May 3, 2023
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3rd to be World Press Freedom Day (or World Press Day) to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression. It marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in Windhoek in 1991.
Each year, UNESCO marks World Press Day by bringing media professionals, press freedom organizations and UN agencies together to assess press freedom worldwide and discuss solutions to recent challenges. Each conference is centred on a theme related to press freedom. The theme for 2021 is “Information as a Public Good”.
